Let's Talk Goat!
Not everyone knows and loves Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats as much as we do...yet! We've put together this page for you to learn more about the breed, our affiliations, and how we raise our holistic herd. If you have any questions or suggestions, please reach out to us on our "Contact" page. Once you check out everything there is to know, we're positive you'll love our goats as much as we do!
Navigating Our Site: The Basics
Kid/Kidding: A kid is a young goat. A kidding refers to the birth of a kid or set of kids.
Doe- a female goat. A junior doe is a female who has not kidded for the first time yet. A senior doe is an experienced momma who has kidded at least once.
Buck- a male goat.
Wether- a castrated male goat. We wether the males in a doe's first kidding just in case something doesn't turn out quite right with the kids. This way, we can keep our breeding lines in tip-top shape. Wethers make great companions and pets!
Holistic- "holistic" means, "characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected." In other words, all components of Findley Ridge Ranch work off one another and we strive to make that happen as naturally as possible. Waste from our animals is composted, scraps of building materials always find another use, and leftover veggies are fed to the chickens every morning. If needed, we treat our animals with all-natural herbal remedies, provide them with minerals and vinegars to keep them healthy, and use herbs and natural remedies during our breeding processes- never additional hormones.
Free Range- our chickens are raised free-range, which in our case means they are given 24/7 access to the outdoors. The hens and roosters have cozy coops to sleep in at night, but come and go as they please all day long. Our goats are also given time every day to roam around the ranch and forage, as is their natural behavior.
GMO-free- We feed all our animals grain, herbs, seeds, hay, and meat (to our dog family) that has been grown and produced free of genetically modified organisms (GMO's). We try to use organic feeds whenever possible.
